Defense Minister Amir Khatami said on Saturday on state television that the Iranian armed forces bought three types of drones with a diameter of 1500 km on Saturday.

He said at a television handover ceremony in Tehran that unmanned aerial vehicles can track “enemy movements from a distance” and are able to complete combat missions.

He said that the drone is equipped with bombs and missiles, and it can fly at an altitude of 45,000 feet (13,716 meters).

According to Khatami, these units include multipurpose UAVs, and repeatedly target unmanned aerial vehicles (“kicks”), a reconnaissance plane and an unmanned drone from the Ababil 3.

He said that Iran’s domestic defense industry built drones with the participation of local universities.

In August 2019, Iran also introduced three domestic “precision-guided smart bombs”, which, according to the defense minister, can be attached to various types of drones.

Drones are a key component of Iranian border surveillance, especially over the Persian Gulf around the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil supplies pass.

Tensions between Iran and the United States reached their highest levels in decades after the United States killed the senior Iranian general, Qasim Soleimani, during the bombing of a drone in Baghdad on January 3, which prompted Iran to launch missiles at al-Qaeda in Iraq a few days later.
